It’s hard to write think pieces when our country is being overrun by racists and fascists. When Nazis, emboldened and empowered by the silent approval (and occasionally overt and vocal support) of our President are more active than they have been in my lifetime.
It’s not that hatred is new, by a long shot. We’ve been fighting for freedom and equality for all for a long time. It’s an ever evolving struggle as we realize our own internalized prejudices are outdated and harmful to groups of people we may have never previously considered. As those of us who aren’t directly impacted by a particular struggle believe the battle has been won and move on…
But as long as Nazis are free to exist, we haven’t won a single one of these fights. As long as the murder of black people can be written by our commander-in-chief blithely stating that “mistakes were made on many sides” there is no equality. None. As long as some of us are not safe, none of us are.
We must stand united against these Nazis (alt-right, white nationalists, white supremacists, hate mongers, etc) now. We must stop them once and for all. We must be vocal in our condemnation and decisive in our actions. At this point, inactivity and silence can only be considered silent consent for hatred, abuse, and murder. You either agree that everyone has an equal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness regardless of their race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, etc, or you do not. There is no gray area in this one; there is only right and wrong.
